florida's west coast as tropical storm debby turns in the gulf of mexico. the slow-moving storm has already been blamed for at least one death. nbc's jay gray joins us live from pensacola, florida. jay, good morning to you. >> reporter: and good morning from the gulf, veronica. yeah, tropical storm debby is stationary right now, churning in these waters, but the surf and the wind here are both growing, just like the concern along the coast. tropical storm debby continues to gather strength in the warm waters of the gulf, the fourth name storm of this young season still well offshore but already delivering a stern warning of what's to come. waves, strong winds and driving rain, the surf already pouring over roads and under beach houses in dolphin island, alabama. forecast models aren't clear when or where debby could make landfall, but the storm has the potential to be a category 1 hurricane when it does strike, and fema is urging residents along the gulf coast to make sure they're ready. >> you know, get water and batteries and just flash lights

and that's about it, just canned food, maybe. >> reporter: the system has spawned several tornadoes and is being blamed for at least one death in southwest florida, where twisters have already splintered trees and ripped roofs away from homes, damage that many worry could be just an early preview of what debby has in store for the gulf coast. and many worry it's also a sign that this is going to be a rough hurricane season. debby is the fourth named storm already this year, the first time ever that's happened, four named storms before the first of july. live in pensacola, i'm jay gray. back to you now. >> jay gray, thank you very much. nbc meteorologist bill karins has also been tracking tropical storm debby for us. bill, what can you tell us? well, debby has weakened. we just got the new update from the national hurricane center. good morning, everyone. debby's now down to a 50-mile-per-hour storm, but i'm not worried about the winds. i wasn't ever really worried about the winds with this. we didn't think it'd ever become a big, huge, category 2, 3 or 4 storm. at worst, it would be a low-end hurricane, but the storm has

weakened, it's sucked in some drier air. it's hard to tell where the center of the storm is on the satellite/radar composite, but it's located where my hand, is south of apalachicola, florida. now the only problem is tornadoes and these bands of thunderstorms. yesterday we had about 18 to 20 tornadoes in florida. that will be the problem again today. i'm not really too concerned with the waves or anything like that, either, or wind damage. it's mostly just a lot of rain and the possibility of tornadoes with this storm. so, let's go in a little closer. here's a look at the tornadoes from yesterday. you notice far from the center, down even north of miami we had a couple tornadoes. west palm beach, too. many of those through central florida. in all, about 25 damage reports yesterday. we'll probably do something similar again today with these bands of storms. right now the worst of it just slicing through the center of florida. as far as the chance for tornadoes go, it looks like tampa, you're okay right now. you did see a pretty good threat earlier. you dumped about two inches of rain as that band went through. now that it's shifting more or less towards the i-40 corridor,

towards orlando, sarasota has also cleared out. for the morning commute on the west coast of florida, it's going to be a pretty tranquil morning, not even raining in many cases, but expect more bands of heavy rain and storms later on today. as far as the forecast path g s goes, just in from the hurricane center, and here's the unbelievable part, why this could be a historic event. five days from now, this storm is going to sit here and drift just in north florida. five days from now. by saturday, i'm going to be saying the same thing over and over again. that's why the rain and flooding will be debby's legacy. >> we should just record you now. >> well -- >> get it over with. >> yeah, hopefully, it will change. >> thanks for that. elsewhere, a fast-growing wildfire near colorado springs, colorado, forced the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and tourists on sunday. in northern colorado, authorities say the total number of homes destroyed by fire over the past few weeks has risen to nearly 250. that blaze has so far scorched more than 130 square miles. right now there are a total of eight wildfires currently

burning in colorado. overseas now, egypt's first freely elected president-elect is expected to meet today with the head of the military ruling council, which last week took away most of the major powers of the president's office. islamic candidate mohamed morsi won with more than 50% of the vote. he said he carried a message of unity and pledged to preserve egypt's international accords, including those with neighboring israel. his supporters are vowing to stay in cairo's tahrir square to push for the presidential powers to be restored. president obama called morsi to congratulate him on his win. now here's your first look at other news going on around america today. in florida, people were doing a double take after seeing a pair of bears fighting. they got into this wrestling match right in the middle of a residential neighborhood. each wildlife officials who watched the video say they have rarely seen anything like this. after their brawl, the bears eventually just wandered off. in south dakota, some teachers captured an unusual

tornado on video. the massive white funnel cloud rained hail as it made its way across a farm outside of the small community of ardmore. fortunately, only a few out buildings were destroyed. no one was hurt. in indianapolis, you could say they liked the sun so much, they put a ring on it. actually, the ring was a halo effect created when sunlight passes at a certain angle through cirrus clouds made of ice crystals, creating this circular rainbow effect. nice, isn't it. finally, in nevada, dogs weren't just trying to stay cool, they were making a big splash. the pooches saw how far they could make it jumping from a dock into a 40-foot pool. one of the four-legged swimmers cleared 24 feet before getting soaked. and now for a look at the national weather, we turn once again to nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. i'm watching those dogs and i'm thinking my own pooch has a long way to go. >> i'm looking at it and thinking i wish i could have

been in that pool this weekend. >> i know. >> so much of the country just roasted, veronica. it was -- you know, obviously, the intensity is on the tropical system and the conditions they're causing, but with the wildfires, talk about life-threatening weather. denver has turned into the new phoenix. 102 yesterday in denver and that 114 in hill city, kansas, that's the hottest temperature they've ever been in the month of june, going back about 60 years. so, this is a very impressive heat wave in the middle of the country. it's still hitting right over top. that big "h" is just a big ridge. the trough off the east coast where the low is near new york state, that's not strong enough to pick up debby and that's whys h why we're in a lingering weather pattern. talk about ridiculous heat, denver, looks like three days in a row -- this will be six days in a row of triple-digit heat in denver. you've never done that before. it will barely cool off by the end of the week, so the fires aren't going to get much better. new england, rain approaching philadelphia and new york for

welcome back to "first look." i'm veronica de la cruz. here are some of the top stories making news this morning. turkey is still searching for the pilots of a plane shot down by syria in the mediterranean friday and has called for an emergency nato meeting over the incident. tensions are high as syria's military yesterday continued to attack areas held by opposition forces. in oklahoma, three railroad

workers are still missing after a collision between two freight trains. two engineers and a conductor are unaccounted for. in canada, search teams home to resume looking today for people trapped in the rubble after a roof collapse at a mall on saturday. one person is feared dead and another trapped inside, but the structure is still too unstable for rescuers to go in. alex trebek, host of "jeopardy!" is expected to fully recover from a mild heart attack saturday in los angeles. the 71-year-old trebek is expected to return for another "jeopardy!" season starting in july. and the iconic giant tortoise known as lonesome george died sunday at the galapagos national park off the coast of ecuador. lonesome george was the last of his subspecies of tortoise and was believed to be about 100 years old. and now, here's your first look at this morning's dish of "scrambled politics."

in a cnn interview, new york city mayor michael bloomberg offered a surprising assessment of the presidential race. given his former republican affiliation, bloomberg says he can't endorse mitt romney because of his stances on gun control and abortion and said on balance that president obama has done a good job. meanwhile, the former governor of new york, democrat mario cuomo, expressed his opinion in an interview cited on politico, saying romney is "playing the nixon game," i have a plan, but you won't know it until you elect me as president. is that what they call it? he may not be an obama fan, but rupert murdoch doesn't sound like much of a romney fan, ever, tweeting "when is romney going to look like a challenger? he seems to play everything safe." the billionaire koch brothers held a secret conservative fund-raiser this weekend. according to buzz feed, aiming for a spending goal for this year's election of, what, $400 million? cha ching! speaking of yet another kind

of coke, but not the brothers, it was definitely coke and taxes on the mind of house speaker john boehner. in a press briefing, boehner said "giving this government more revenue would be like giving a cocaine addict who wants to quit more cocaine." what? okay. former minnesota governor tim pawlenty may lead the list of potential running mates for mitt romney, but pawlenty told cbs he could help romney best in other ways than as vp. finally, politico reports that a friday luncheon held by latino elected and appointed officials about 1,000 delegates at the conference were told to hurry up and finish lunch so the secret service could collect everyone's knives and forks before the president delivered a speech. a secret service spokesman confirmed such requirements are common at large events where the president speaks at about the same time people are dining. okay. excuse me, mr. president, i'd like my fork back. you know, since i'm serving up your morning dish of "scrambled politics." and a quick programming note

member of the red sox? yes, it was. he was traded to the white sox after the game. youkilis goes out a winner. final 9-4. call it fate, but youkilis's new team wore the red striped jerseys instead of the black and white. corey hart saw red, robbed of a sure home run. that keeps the game scoreless into the tenth. two on for eduardo escobar, and he ends it with a walk-off single. white sox win 1-0 in tenth. battle of the bay. morris hit his first major league home runs, ends it with a three-run bomb in the ninth and a's take the win. bower took the checkered flag at sonoma. and hot drama at the women's trial finals curing the 100-meter final. they finished in a dead heat for third place. problem, is only the top three get a trip to london.

yesterday, race officials decided the final spot will be determined by either a runoff or a simple coin toss. i don't know about you, but i would prefer rock, paper, scissors. and that's your first look at sports. i'm mario solis. and now for another look at the weather, here's nbc meteorologist bill karins with the weather channel forecast. what do you think, and how do they decide that? >> i don't know. must be by like -- >> rock, paper, scissors. >> that's how they do it. good morning, everyone. in case you're looking for your debby update, the hurricane center provides those every six hours. we just got our 5:00 east coast advisory. the next advisory where they update the path and intensity will be out later. every six hours, they do a new path. 50-mile-per-hour winds right now, very disorganized. it's not the best looking of tropical storms. a lot of dry air moved into it it's not well organized. it's not going to intensify, which is good. and the forecast path just drifts it to the north-northeast over five days.

>> that's a new one. >> "brave" is pixar's 13th consecutive film to open up in the top spot. and the two-week rating champ "madagascar 3: europe's most wanted" -- have you seen this, bill? >> i haven't, have you? >> i haven't, but took in $20 million, third weekend it came in second. then the 3d epic thriller "abraham lincoln vampire hunter" debuted in third with a soft $16.5 million. considering its $68 million price tag, fox executives hoping this one is going to have legs in the coming weeks. finally, in the number ten spot -- >> tenth? >> yeah, came in at number ten, which is surprising. this is called "seeking a friend for the end of the world." it stars one of my favorites, steve carell. there you see keira knightley. this one sort of crashed and burned in its opening weekend, a meager $3.8 million. that's all it made, which i think is such a bummer. i love steve carell. >> did he peak with "the 40-year-old virgin." can you peak with your first major film? he'll probably never top that. >> so sad.
